SENS Welcomes New Faculty Member Dr. Andrea Kraj

Dr. Kraj started in the School of Environment and Sustainability on March 1, 2020.

The School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS) is pleased to introduce our new faculty member, Dr. Andrea Kraj, who joined us officially on March 1, 2020.

A revolutionary leader in developing advanced, multi renewable energy systems, Dr. Kraj is a practicing professional engineer (Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba) specialized in Microgrid Energy Systems and Smart Grid Technology for Smart Cities and Island Energy Networks, with 22 years of experience. Her work focuses on the application of intelligent energy systems for improved management of multiple renewable energy systems (wind, solar, biomass, storage, etc.) for remote electrification. She holds a Ph.D. (2015), M.Sc. (2007) and B.Sc. (2003) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with Aerospace Specialization and is a pioneering leader in developing sophisticated computer modeling and simulation of advanced energy systems, supporting the design, operation, and optimization of multi-renewable energy systems with storage for micro-grid networks.

Dr. Kraj set precedent in Manitoba with her work in utility-scale community-owned wind farm development, helping rural farming communities characterize their resources, establish cooperative business models and create feasible 150-300MW wind energy projects. Her foundational work in energy policy for community power projects enabled communities to retain ownership through project development and lead other communities to do the same. Her vision in community energy policy and microgrid technology is leading Northern Remote Communities to employ the community power model for empowering themselves with the appropriate energy technology at their location using smart microgrids.

She is an accomplished author and speaker (TEDx), having published several articles on energy policy, community energy development, and remote power systems. Additionally, she has several years of experience in design for manufacture, CAD modeling and FEA in the aerospace, composite materials, and international business sectors.

Dr. Kraj is passionate about community renewable energy, smart cities, smart grid, remote power systems, energy policy, and sustainability. Dr. Kraj also created and hosts the podcast, Fempower, with the intention of celebrating women, especially focused on representing women in the T.E.A.M.S. fields.

She is currently working remotely from Manitoba and will transition to Saskatoon in the coming weeks.
