Redberry Lake Biosphere Region and TRANSECTS Workshop Report
The following report details presentations, discussions, and outcomes from a workshop held in the fall of 2022 exploring principles and promising practices in transdisciplinary research, and opportunities for reflection, connection and collaboration with Redberry Lake Biosphere Region and TRANSECTS.
The TRANSECTS Program Institute in Canada – September 2023: Summary Report
The TRANSECTS Canada Program Institute was held from September 10th to 13th, 2023, as a national gathering for the TRANSECTS network in Canada. A group of 17 TRANSECTS members and TILL alumni met in Kananaskis, Alberta, at the Biogeoscience Institute: Barrier Lake Field Station. The Program Institute was centred around three main goals, each reflected in the topics and activities.

Bridging Actions and Aspirations: A Summary of the TRANSECTS International Program Institute, June 2024
As TRANSECTS approaches its midpoint in 2025, the 2024 international Program Institute offered a valuable platform to evaluate our progress towards the project’s original goals and intentions. The event, centered around the theme “Mind the Gap: Aligning Actions with Aspirations,” was held at Vancouver Island University in British Columbia, Canada, following the Transdisciplinary International Learning Lab (TILL) hosted by the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI). 28 academics, practitioners, graduate students, and TILL alumni from each of the three hub countries – Canada, Germany, and South Africa – came together at this international gathering to explore ways to strengthen our progress towards TRANSECTS’ goals and objectives.

Assessing the readiness and capacity of BIOSPHERE REGIONS to implement equity, diversity and inclusion - A Desktop review
TRANSECTS sponsored an environmental scan (e-scan) to review the websites of 17 Canadian BR websites to understand the status of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) implementation within BRs. For each BR website, all tabs were searched, particularly the “About” section, which provides information on the mission and vision statements, strategic objectives or plan (if any), and composition of the team and board of directors. We limited the search to broad EDI considerations and looked for terms such as “equity”, “diversity”, “diverse”, “equality”, “inclusion”, “accessibility”, “justice”, “minority”, “racialized”, “reconciliation”, and “SDG 5 and 10”. While we considered reconciliation efforts to be different from EDI, we included the word “reconciliation” in our search to understand the extent to which BRs are working towards advancing reconciliation.
The outcomes of the e-scan have been shared with both practitioners and academics at the 2024 EuroMAB Workshop in Germany and during the TRANSECTS Program Institute at Vancouver Island University (VIU). The next phase of this work involves engaging with BR practitioners across Canada to share the findings of the research, solicit feedback, and explore opportunities, including funding, to co-create resources, materials, and approaches that can support BRs to comprehensively enhance EDI knowledge and capacity.
