Are you a graduate student interested in studying the effects of climate change, the impact coastal communities are facing in a changing world, environmental sustainability, or nature-based solutions?
Interested in spending your upcoming summer conducting applied research in vibrant coastal environments—from tropical shorelines in Sri Lanka and the Philippines to the dynamic coastal landscapes of New Zealand?
If you are motivated to take your research beyond the classroom and into real-world field settings, this opportunity is for you.
*Note, successful students who complete the fellowship will receive a 6 cu of course credit
Fellowship overview
The SENS Coastal Climate and Nature Fellowships support USask graduate students to undertake a fully-funded, 12-week international research placement focused on:
- Coastal climate resilience
- Nature-based solutions
- Community-based climate adaptation
- Geospatial analysis and remote sensing
- Environmental economics (including environmental economics and ecosystem service valuation)
- Public policy (including environemntal policy and governance)
- Regenerative and resilient coastal systems
This fellowship is designed to provide hands-on, applied international research experience with leading academic partners and local stakeholders.

- 2 awards per region:
- Sri Lanka
- Philippines
- New Zealand
*when you apply, you will rank your preferred location (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) during the process. Final placements will be determined based on research alignment, expertise, and partner capacity.
- Duration: 12 weeks
- Placement Window: Between May and August 2026
- Tentative Fellowship Period: Early May to Late July 2026 (exact dates to be confirmed with host institutions)
Students will complete their full 12-week placement within this period.
Thanks to funding from Global Affairs Canada, each fellowship placement covers:
- Return airfare to international destination
- Accmmodation
- Meals
- Living allowance (stipend)
Applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan
- Be a Master's or PhD student at the time of application
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be in good academic standing
Students from the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Environmental Studies

- Agriculture and Bioresources
- Arts and Science
- Geography
- Urban and Regional Planning
- Economics (including environmental economics)
- Public Policy (including environmental policy)
- Community-based and participatory research
- Sustainable-related disciplines
Interdisciplinary students are encouraged.
