I was born in Wales, on the coast, so water has always been a part of my life. Since moving to Canada, it has been more about water in its frozen form, through many hours in ice rinks with our children! I have worked for many different organisations, including government and the United Nations. I am a water-health researcher and I am currently a faculty member in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Saskatchewan. My research focuses on supporting communities in understanding physical and social systems as they affect local water security and health, particularly in rural and Indigenous communities. An important aspect of this is how gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity, ability and other factors alter peoples’ experiences and relationships with water. These are the reasons that I became engaged in TRANSECTS – biospheres are about the land and the ecosystems, which include water, but which also include relationships with people within and around biospheres.
