TRANSECTS
Dr. Garrett Richards is an associate professor with the Environmental Policy Institute (EPI) at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. With an interdisciplinary background in environmental studies and political science, he is broadly interested in knowledge mobilization for sustainability, especially around renewable energy, climate change, and waste. He teaches courses that engage with external organizations to give students real-world policy and research experiences that benefit partners, he coordinates short-term partnered research projects resulting in accessible knowledge mobilization products, and he supervises graduate students through a "flipped thesis" model that allows students to take the lead in co-designing their research with partner organizations. His roles as the inaugural coordinator for the Environmental Policy Innovation Lab (EPILab) and the inaugural graduate officer for the Transdisciplinary Sustainability (TRSU) PhD program intersect with his own transdisciplinary research practice. Normally, Dr. Richards is based out of Corner Brook, but he is in Saskatoon and working with TRANSECTS during his sabbatical year. As part of the TRANSECTS team, his role will be to develop continuing education content for competencies in transdisciplinary sustainability.
